Hey parent, I get it it…it can be a not so exciting day to round up the kiddos pack them up in a car and head to the photoshoot location, all while trying to keep the peace and the outfits from staining 🤣.
As a photographer who’s photographed many families, I’ve learned a thing or two on how to make these sessions go as smooth as possible and get the most photos out of your session!
Choose a location that the kids are familiar with. If you want beach photos but your child(ren) have never been to a beach before, you may want to see how they react going to the beach before booking a location. Having children be familiar with the location is a great place to start. Also, don’t hesitate to reach out to your photographer for ideas and tips! THIS is what they do for a living so asking for their advice and help is always the way to go.
Book your session around the kids. Wait these photos are about them?? Just kidding… Be aware if your child(ren) have naps, wake hours, lunch or dinner, etc. Don’t book your session when the kids have empty stomachs. I highly recommend to plan accordingly to your kid’s schedule. These will make the session go so much smoother!
Be Prepared. Don’t be last minute! From booking your session to picking out outfits, to getting the kids in the car. If you’re a parent, you know you have to start getting ready way before you *think* it’s a good time to start getting ready, getting dressed and getting the kids buckled. Making sure everyone feels comfortable in their outfit and knowing everything fits everyone gives the moms a piece of mind.
Be Present. Don’t worry about getting you kids to stand still and smile, or getting them to pay attention to the photographer for minutes on end. I get it, the attention span is little to none 😅! I am all for the candid, in-the-moment photo opportunities. I promise, the best photos in your gallery are of your kids being themselves! Truthfully, I don’t mind the yelling and the screaming and the extra playing during our session. I also opt in for running, playing, hugs, laughter, spins and more!
I hope these tips helped you out for your next family session! As always feel free to reach out with any questions and if you’re thinking about booking a family session, let’s chat! Be sure to follow me on Instagram too to keep up with updates!
